What's the difference between AVIF and JPG?

AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, built on top of the AV1 video codec. JPG (also written JPEG) is the workhorse lossy format for photographs.

Does the quality drop converting between two lossy formats?

Slightly. Each lossy re-encoding discards a small amount of detail. For a single conversion the difference is usually imperceptible at sensible quality settings. Avoid repeated round-trips through lossy formats.

What quality should I pick?

For JPG, quality 75-85 is the sweet spot — small files with no visible difference from the original. Lower than 60 starts to show artifacts. Higher than 90 mostly just makes the file bigger.

Why convert away from AVIF?

AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, built on top of the AV1 video codec. Anything surprising about AVIF or JPG?

AVIF encoding is single-threaded by default — large images can take 5–10 seconds in browser. And on the JPG side: JPG quality 80–85 is usually visually indistinguishable from the original. Don't ship q100.

Does this work on mobile?
