What is the difference between XLSX and JSON?

XLSX is the standard Excel workbook format: a ZIP archive of XML files describing sheets, cells, formulas and formatting. It has been the Excel default since 2007 and is readable by Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers. JSON is a plain-text data format that stores nested objects and arrays. It is the standard payload format for web APIs, readable in any text editor, and parsed natively by every major programming language.

Will I lose anything converting XLSX to JSON?

Some things, yes. XLSX carries formatting, multiple sheets and formulas, and JSON has no way to represent any of it. The values themselves come across intact; the structure around them does not.

Anything to watch out for with JSON?

JSON has no comment syntax. Anything stripped from a JSONC or JSON5 source is gone. JSON numbers are IEEE 754 doubles — integers beyond 2^53 lose precision silently.

What happens to formulas?

Formulas are exported as their last computed values. The formula text itself is not preserved in JSON, because the format has no way to represent it.

What if my workbook has multiple sheets?

JSON is a single-table format, so only the first sheet is exported. If you need another sheet, reorder the workbook first or export each sheet separately.

What should I know about starting from XLSX?

XLSX is a ZIP of XML parts, so it carries multiple sheets, formulas, styles and charts — more than most target formats can represent. More broadly: XLSX is the modern Excel workbook format — a ZIP archive containing XML parts that describe sheets, cells, styles, formulas and charts. It replaced the older binary XLS in Office 2007.

When is JSON the right choice?

JSON suits: aPI request and response payloads; configuration files that need nesting; anything consumed directly by JavaScript. It is the wrong choice when very large tabular datasets, where the repeated keys dominate the file size.

Is there a file size limit?

No hard limit — the constraint is your browser's memory. Files under 50MB convert in a few seconds. Larger files work but take longer, and a browser tab typically has 250-500MB to play with, so very large batches are better split into smaller groups.

Does this work on mobile?
