What is the difference between XLSX and ODS?

XLSX is the standard Excel workbook format: a ZIP archive of XML files describing sheets, cells, formulas and formatting. It has been the Excel default since 2007 and is readable by Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers. ODS is the OpenDocument spreadsheet format used natively by LibreOffice Calc. It is an ISO standard and a ZIP container of XML, carrying multiple sheets, formulas and formatting much as XLSX does.
