What's the difference between JPG and PNG?

JPG (also written JPEG) is the workhorse lossy format for photographs. PNG is a lossless raster format that supports transparency.

Does converting from lossy JPG to lossless PNG restore quality?

No. Once JPG has discarded detail during its lossy compression, that information can't be recovered. PNG will preserve whatever's in the JPG exactly — same quality, just larger file size. Convert this direction only when you need a lossless workflow downstream.

Anything surprising about JPG or PNG?

JPG quality 80–85 is usually visually indistinguishable from the original. Don't ship q100. And on the PNG side: PNG-8 uses a palette of up to 256 colors and is much smaller than PNG-24, but loses gradient fidelity.

Does this work on mobile?
